How Lions trading David Montgomery impacts Detroit's 2026 cap space

The Detroit Lions have unloaded running back David Montgomery in a trade with the Houston Texans and the move is expected to give the Lions a bit more cap room.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Lions are trading Montgomery to Houston in exchange for a fourth-round pick, a seventh-round pick, and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs.

Not included in Schefter's report is the Lions picking up any of the remaining money on Montgomery's contract.

That could change as more information surfaces, but that is all we have to work with right now.

Pride of Detroit's Jeremy Reisman notes that the trade will net the Lions a savings of about $1.92 million in 2026.

"Unless the Lions are eating some of [David Montgomery's] salary.... Lions free up $3.5M in cap space by moving Montgomery. Add $1.58M in Scrugg's contract," Reisman said. "So net +$1.92M in space."

Lions' updated cap space

While the savings inches the Lions closer to cap compliance, Detroit still has more work to do, with the team sitting at $9.3 million over the cap, per Spotrac.

This obviously means more moves are coming for the Lions, who have until March 11 to get under the salary cap.
