Breanna Stewart reveals Adam Silver's role in WNBA CBA talks -- and it isn't what you think

In the midst of what could be described as a positive updated on the status of WNBA collective bargaining talks, New York Liberty star forward Breanna Stewart told reporters that NBA commissioner Adam Silver's role in the negotiations has not been as significant as once thought.

Over the NBA's All-Star Weekend, Silver described CBA talks as being near the "11th hour," and he had told reporters that he was “very involved behind the scenes” in getting a new deal over the line. Last week, the WNBA told the Women's National Basketball Players Association that a term sheet had to be agreed upon by March 10 in order to preserve a full-length 2026 season.

However, Stewart -- who is part of the WNBPA's executive committee -- said during media availability at Unrivaled in New York on Monday that Silver "has not been at the table" in any bargaining sessions, whether those are in-person or Zoom meetings.

“I don't know what's what else is happening behind the scenes, but from our perspective, we haven't seen them," Stewart said of Silver and NBA representation during the talks.

Stewart's comments don't paint Silver in a great light with respect to his role in the ongoing talks. Only time will tell as to whether he responds -- though the best response of all might be striking a deal on a new CBA with historic financial gains for the players in the next week.
