Texans fans will love these David Montgomery rumors after trade with Lions

The Houston Texans wanted running back David Montgomery and they got their man after a trade with the Detroit Lions.

But the Texans' interest in Montgomery wasn't a one-way street and the veteran running back wanted to go to Houston, according to multiple rumors.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that the Texans were Montgomery's "preferred destination" if he was to be traded.

"The Texans were David Montgomery’s preferred destination if he was to be traded, sources say," Garafolo reported.

Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com adds that Montgomery is "very happy with the trade."

It's not hard to see why Montgomery is thrilled to be going to Houston.

After sharing a backfield with Jahmyr Gibbs the last three seasons and seeing his role decrease in 2025, Montgomery is going to lead the backfield and could be a bellcow for Houston.

The Texans cutting Joe Mixon is inevitable, and that move would have left Houston with two unproven backs in Woody Marks and Jawhar Jordan, which is why the Texans needed a veteran rusher like Montgomery.

Along with his expected role, Montgomery is joining a good Texans team that should make the playoffs once again in 2026, and Houston could challenge for a Super Bowl if the team can turn things around on offense.

Montgomery gives Houston a much stronger backfield and he will play a key role in that attempted turnaround next season.
