Arne Slot has provided a significant update on the fitness of Florian Wirtz, confirming the playmaker is expected to miss both of this week’s encounters against Wolves. The German international is now battling to be fit in time for Liverpool’s high-stakes Champions League trip to face Galatasaray on March 10.
The 22-year-old midfielder has been sidelined since sustaining a back injury during the warmup for the recent clash with Nottingham Forest. While there was initial hope that the “No. 7” might feature in Friday’s FA Cup tie, Slot has now pushed back the expected return date.
The Race for the RAMS Park Clash
During Monday morning’s pre-match press conference, Slot indicated that Wirtz would likely sit out the next two fixtures at Molineux to ensure he is ready for the European stage in Istanbul.
“We are hopeful to have him back sometime next week; perhaps a bit earlier or later, but that is the current timescale,” Slot explained as quoted by Thisisanfield.
The injury is a rare setback for Wirtz, who has been one of Liverpool’s most durable performers this season. Only six outfield players have logged more minutes, a workload that has helped him maintain a high level of consistency until this recent spinal irritation.
Midfield Shuffles and Youth Prospects
In Wirtz’s absence, Dominik Szoboszlai is expected to continue in the advanced “Number 10” role. The Hungarian excelled in the position during Saturday’s 5-2 hammering of West Ham, offering Slot some reassurance despite the loss of his primary creative outlet.
However, with Wataru Endo, James McConnell, and Stefan Bajcetic also unavailable, Liverpool’s engine room is looking increasingly thin. This personnel crisis could lead to more opportunities for academy starlets:
Trey Nyoni: The highly-rated youngster is tipped for more minutes in the upcoming FA Cup fixture.
Rio Ngumoha: The teenage winger could see his role expanded as Slot looks to protect his senior stars ahead of the Galatasaray showdown.
Looking Ahead to Istanbul
The medical staff are reportedly working around the clock to ensure Wirtz is available for the atmosphere at Galatasaray. With the Turkish champions known for their formidable home record, having Wirtz’s vision and ball retention will be vital for Liverpool’s Champions League progression.
