Liverpool still want to sign"excellent"£21.9m ace after missing out in January - report

Liverpool are still pursuing a possible move for Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Right-back has been a problem position for the Reds all season long, with the exit of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid hurting them, even though some fans may not want to admit it.

Both Conor Bradley and new signing Jeremie Frimpong have struggled with injuries, with the former out for the rest of the campaign and the latter only returning in the 5-2 win at home to West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday.

It has meant that Joe Gomez has had to fill in at right-back, as well as Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones, and it may even be that Liverpool delve back into the transfer market in the summer.

According to a new report from TuttoMercatoWeb, the Reds remain “strong” on the Netherlands international ahead of the next window.

He will have a £21.9m release clause in his Inter contract at the end of the season, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2028.

Do Liverpool need to sign Denzel Dumfries?

Dumfries is undoubtedly a good player, having impressed for the Netherlands at both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, scoring one and assisting twice in the former.

He has also been praised by Micah Richards in the past, who said of him: “I thought Inter were outstanding, it could have been five. I thought Dumfries was excellent. His work rate down that right-hand side. Up and down. Up and down. Decision-making. Defend when you need to. Attack when you needed to.”

But despite this, Liverpool arguably don’t need another right-back, and should be focusing more on improving their centre-back options.

It is still early days for Frimpong, and he could be a fantastic option when fully fit and firing, while Bradley is also an impressive performer, even though his injury record is a concern, and his current absence may even stretch into 2027.

Dumfries turns 30 in April, too, so he wouldn’t be a long-term addition, and if Liverpool do want a right-back, a younger option needs to be looked at instead.
