With free agency almost here, the Pittsburgh Steelers can improve their roster. They have several weaknesses, including at wide receiver. DK Metcalf is their No. 1, but they don’t have much behind him, especially as Calvin Austin III hits free agency. Analyst Ryan Wilson pointed to Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs as the top free agent that the Steelers should pursue.
“I’m gonna go with Romeo Doubs because they had no No. 2 receiver last year…” Wilson said Monday on CBS Sports HQ. “Romeo Doubs is so good at what he does in terms of stretching the field for his quarterback. He can win at all three levels.
“And he opens things up for DK [Metcalf], which became a huge issue last year when it was clear that there was no one else to throw to that wasn’t named Darnell Washington.”
Doubs was the Packers’ 2022 fourth-round pick, and he’s been fairly productive in his time there. While the Packers’ receiver room has been crowded, Doubs has still posted at least 600 receiving yards in each of the last three seasons. That includes catching 55 passes for a career-high 724 yards last year.
Doubs isn’t the most decorated receiver in the league, but perhaps that will help keep his cost down. Also, it’s fair to wonder if he can produce more if given more opportunities. He’ll be 26 this season, so his game could still hit another level.
Additionally, Doubs was teammates with Aaron Rodgers in 2022. He didn’t do anything special that year, catching 42 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns, but he developed a good relationship with Rodgers. The quarterback was reportedly interested in Doubs’ availability during last season. Rodgers already tried to bring Doubs to Pittsburgh once. If he doesn’t retire, perhaps he’ll do that again.
However, Doubs stated that he wants to remain with the Packers. While that doesn’t guarantee that they’ll re-sign him, Doubs clearly isn’t jumping at the opportunity to leave Green Bay.
Doubs isn’t the only receiver who will hit the market, though. During that same segment, John Breech brought up another pass catcher that the Steelers could go after.
“I am going with a 49ers wide receiver in Jauan Jennings…” Breech said. “When you look at that depth chart at receiver for the Steelers, there is DK Metcalf, and there is not a lot behind him. If you’re the Steelers, you have to make it a priority to go out and get someone who can be a strong No. 2 guy behind Metcalf. That’s exactly what Jennings can do.”
Jennings is a little older than Doubs, turning 29 in July, but he’s shown that he can be a dependable complementary piece. He was a 49ers’ 2020 seventh-round pick, and he was mostly a depth piece until 2024. Then, Jennings’ role increased due to injuries. He made the most of his opportunity, catching 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games with only 10 starts.
He had a solid 2025 season, too, recording 55 catches for 643 yards and nine touchdowns. Jennings isn’t a No. 1 receiver, but he’s a solid No. 2, and that’s what the Steelers need.
Adding Doubs or Jennings would be an upgrade for the Steelers. However, they’ll likely have competition if they want to sign either player. The Steelers aren’t the only team that needs a receiver, and the market figures to be competitive.
