With future Hall of Fame left tackle Trent Williams and the 49ers in yet another contract dispute over a week out from the start of free agency, trade rumors are starting to swirl around both parties. The latest intriguing trade idea has been floated by insider David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard.
After the recent trade that sent veteran left tackle Tytus Howard from the Houston Texans to the Cleveland Browns took place, Lombardi now believes that the Texans could be a potential trade partner for the Niners if they wanted to go down that route. Perhaps Williams could replace Howard.
Analyzing a Potential Trent Williams Trade From the San Francisco 49ers to the Houston Texans

Here is what Lombardi had to say specifically on social media about the idea of Williams being traded to the Texans:
“What if the Texans call the 49ers on Trent Williams, and SF simultaneously has an opportunity in free agency to get younger and more cost-efficient at LT with Rasheed Walker (plus add draft capital)?”

Very rarely can a team trade away a 38-year-old player for serious draft capital. However, San Francisco might just have that opportunity right now. Williams is still at the top of his game as he is coming off his 12th Pro Bowl nod and fifth All-Pro selection. But if GM John Lynch believes that Williams, who is making just over $27.5 million a year, doesn’t have a lot left in the tank, a trade could be a wise move for the 49ers.
Furthermore, the opportunity to earn more draft picks and have more room to add a significant name in free agency may be too hard to pass up. Lombardi brought up veteran left tackle Rasheed Walker as a potential option in free agency. Walker has been a full-time starter at tackle for the Green Bay Packers each of the last three seasons.
The 49ers’ Super Bowl Chances Without Trent Williams

There have not been many better offensive linemen over the last decade-and-a-half in the NFL than Williams. The soon-to-be 17-year veteran has accomplished everything that young offensive linemen dream about growing up. All he is missing in his Canton-bound portfolio is a Super Bowl ring.
While Williams and San Francisco have gotten close to glory in the last few seasons, the team hasn’t been able to get over the hump and bring the Lombardi Trophy back to the Bay Area. Now, with a potential trade as an option, Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have to ask themselves if the team is better with or without Williams.
Would they either be able to acquire a better left tackle at some point or find a serviceable player at a lower price? Could that player come along in the upcoming NFL Draft? Time will only tell as the NFL free agency period is just days away from starting up.
