Green Bay Packers: Marshon Lattimore suddenly a possible free agent target in 2026

While Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst stated publicly that the team was satisfied with their cornerback play in 2025. However, the numbers show that the main cornerback tandem of Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine, and Nate Hobbs was far from satisfactory.

Nixon, for example, may have broken up 17 passes, but allowed a 64.4% completion percentage and 105.1 passer rating when targeted. Valentine only allowed a 59.7% completion percentage, but the seven touchdowns he also allowed gave quarterbacks a 121.7 passer rating when targeting him.

Hobbs, who was signed in the off-season as a free agent, only appeared in 11 games, but was not effective when he did play. He allowed a 65.5% completion percentage and 111.1 passer rating when targeted.

Clearly, none of these performances were good enough, no matter what Gutekunst said publicly.

Could the Green Bay Packers pursue Marshon Lattimore?

Back during the 2024 NFL season, Packers fans were enraged that Green Bay did not acquire three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore at the trade deadline. He ended up going to the Washington Commanders for a third and fifth round pick.

Now, though, Washington has informed Lattimore that they are going to release him, and the Packers may have a chance of signing him in free agency:

Commanders have informed former Pro-Bowl CB Marshon Lattimore that they intend to release him before the new league year begins, a move that will save the team $18.5 million in salary cap space, per sources. pic.twitter.com/KNDe1botDA

As can be seen above, the Commanders can save $18.5 million by releasing him.

The move, though, also makes sense for Washington in the sense that Lattimore only played 11 games for them since they got him. He only appeared in two games for Washington in 2024 due to ongoing hamstring issues. Last year, he tore his ACL after nine games and, of course, missed the rest of the season.

He will not, obviously, be able to play until after the 2026 NFL season starts. Even then, there is no guarantee he will return to his Pro Bowl form.

Some of the best moves are the ones a team does not make, and it would appear that Gutekunst was right to pass on Lattimore in 2024, and he probably should again.
