Lakers predicted to cut ties with $152 million forward duo via 'painful divorce'

The Los Angeles Lakers should be thrilled about the upcoming offseason.

The free-agent and trade markets will undoubtedly turn heads, giving Los Angeles a golden opportunity to acquire/sign assets who will make an immediate impact. In the process, though, the Lakers must move on from multiple valuable contributors to help their offseason run smoothly.

In Lake Show Life’s Tyler Watts’ opinion, the Lakers will likely cut ties with their $152 million forward duo this summer via a 'painful divorce'.

“Rui Hachimura will join LeBron James in painfully divorcing the Lakers this summer,” Watts wrote Saturday.

“The Lakers will have cap space this summer if the franchise lets players walk. They have even more room because Austin Reaves has a small cap hold if he declines his player option. That will allow LA to spend and exceed the cap to re-sign AR. To do that, LeBron, Hachimura, Maxi Kleber, and Luke Kennard will all be cap casualties.”

“Fans will be upset to see LeBron and Rui go. Kennard hasn’t yet made a massive splash in Hollywood, but his shooting will forever tantalize contending teams. Those divorces will involve some pain, but Lakers fans must suffer to be a serious title contender again.”

There's no doubt that James’ departure from the Lakers would be less surprising than Hachimura’s. There’s heavy speculation that James, who’s in the final year of his two-year, $101 million contract extension with the Lakers, will end his NBA career in storybook fashion by returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers for the final act.

Hachimura, who’s in the final year of his three-year, $51 million contract with Los Angeles, is a player the Lakers can’t retain if they want to elevate their ceiling/championship odds for the 2026-27 season.

The Lakers have their sights set on various standout contributors, making it likely that Hachimura, along with James, will spend the next leg of their career elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see how Los Angeles’ offseason plays out this summer.
