Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa gets potentially unwanted career update

We know that Tua Tagovailoa's career with the Miami Dolphins is essentially over, with the franchise set to either cut or trade him in the coming weeks, according to reports.

Seemingly fine with eating a large chunk of dead money, it is clear the Dolphins want a change.

And in truth, a change could be good for Tua, too.

But what isn't is how other teams view him moving forward in 2026.

If Tua had hopes he could land somewhere and be a bona fide starter for someone, well, that might not be the case.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer dropped the latest on Tua.

"After all those discussions in Indy, I’d say the consensus view among quarterback-hungry teams on Tagovailoa, who turns 28 today, is that he’s a low-end starter/high-end backup at the position, which would make the idea of something in the neighborhood of what Justin Fields got last year—a two-year, $40 million deal with $30 million guaranteed—reasonable," Breer wrote.

"We’ll see if the Dolphins can thread the needle to eat money, trade him, and get him to a place that might give a little extra for 2027 to create some runway to resurrect his career."

Where could Tua land?

A couple of teams spring to mind.

The New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, and possibly the Minnesota Vikings.

You can make the case in all of those situations, Tua will have the chance to start. It would just be a question of money for the quarterback and what teams are willing to pay him.

Would Tua be content going somewhere as a backup? Similar to Sam Darnold, before then getting another chance to prove himself elsewhere? Possibly.

But surely Tua wants to be a genuine starter first, and if those offers aren't out there this offseason, then a backup role might be where he settles.
