Thompson had originally joined Dallas to join a contender with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
However, an injury to Irving (and a trade of Doncic) has led the franchise in a much different direction.
Last season, the Mavs lost in the play-in tournament.

The Mavs enter play as the 12th seed in the Western Conference with a 21-39 record in 60 games.
After the Hornets, they will play their next game on Thursday night when they play the Orlando Magic in Florida.
On the road, the Mavs are just 7-19 in 26 games played outside of Dallas.
Mavs PR wrote (on January 17): “With a turnaround jumper at the 4:56 mark of the first quarter today against the Jazz, Klay Thompson reached 17,000 career points. Thompson is the 109th player in NBA history to reach the milestone.”

The Mavs will be playing a Hornets team that is a lot better than most people expected heading into the 2025-26 season.
They are 30-31 in 61 games, which currently has them as the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference.
Over their last ten games, the Hornets have gone 7-3.
