Chelsea eye Darwin Nunez: Todd Boehly tried to sign Liverpool favourite before, in 2024

Chelsea are preparing for a busy summer window having failed to sign any new players in January, and Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has emerged as a possible signing.

Nunez is currently in the Middle East with Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal. The Uruguay star, however, has not managed to prove his £57m transfer fee since leaving Liverpool, scoring just nine goals in 24.

The striker is not happy, and indeed, Nunez wants to return to the Premier League. It is claimed he wants to return to the Premier League, with Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle all interested in signing Nunez.

Whether he would be a good signing is unclear. His time at Liverpool was awash with criticism. Nunez was known for his wasteful finishing, a rush of blood to his head, but being a nightmare to defend against.

Todd Boehly has tried to sign Darwin Nunez before

Remarkably, this is not the first time Chelsea have been linked with the former Benfica striker. Indeed, in 2024, The Times claim that Chelsea had made an enquiry to raid Liverpool for the South American.

Indeed, Boehly was keen on raiding the Reds to seal a loan deal for Nunez. Boehly’s approach in the market has become clearer, signing players who simply played for, or were targeted by, their rivals.

Man City’s interest in Marc Cucurella saw Boehly land the Spaniard, which has turned out to be a super deal. Boehly made a loan-swap offer according to the report, offering Joao Felix to Arne Slot’s side.

Ultimately, Liverpool did not want to do a deal with one of their closest rivals; hardly surprising. The big striker would remain on Merseyside for another year before completing a big-money move to Al Hilal.

Chelsea’s striker situation and what a new signing means

Currently, Joao Pedro is first choice and behind him, the Blues have Liam Delap and Marc Guiu. It is a trio of strikers that have potential, but are miles off the kind of quality required to win a Premier League title.

What are you doing with Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea fans?

Chelsea need much better up top. Pedro is a striker who drops in and contributes in transition, so the Blues need a no.9 who dictates the centre-backs all the time. Well, two are set to return in the summer.

Nicolas Jackson won’t be staying at Bayern, and Emanuel Emegha is set to complete his move from sister club Strasbourg. That would leave Chelsea with five strikers and a couple will have to be sold this summer.

Especially, if Chelsea plan on signing a new striker, like Nunez. Delap is a target for five Premier League clubs including Man United and Tottenham, while Guiu is likely to go on loan and Jackson may follow.
