Liverpool will look to make a specific signing in the summer transfer window, in order to boost their squad depth, according to a fresh claim.
Injury problems continue to hurt the Reds, with Florian Wirtz a high-profile absentee – one who may not return until the Champions League last-16 clash away to Galatasaray next Tuesday, as Arne Slot has confirmed:
“Not anything different than what I said after the game [on Saturday],” the head coach said when asked about Wirtz at his pre-match press conference on Monday morning.
“The game tomorrow will probably come too soon and maybe the game at the weekend as well. Let’s see how that ends up. But we hope to have him back somewhere next week. Maybe earlier. Maybe a bit later. But that timescale.”
Right-back has been a problem position throughout this season, with Conor Bradley potentially missing for the remainder of 2026, and Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez also missing at different times.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool will target a new right-back when the summer window arrives, with the Reds “likely to be forced” into adding one because of their lack of depth there.
The report points out that Slot “has resorted to using makeshift options in that position since the start of the campaign”, and for that reason, “it is understood that the recruitment team are already working to identify summer targets in that area of the pitch.”
Do Liverpool need to sign a new right-back?
Much of Liverpool’s right-back dilemma feels dependent on the severity of Bradley’s knee injury suffered away to Arsenal earlier in the year, with the Northern Irishman potentially not back until next season.
If that does prove to be the case, a new signing could well be needed, especially with Gomez possibly leaving Anfield at the end of the season.
Liverpool have recently been linked with a move for Inter Milan and Netherlands ace Denzel Dumfries, but he is about to turn 30, and a younger right-back should be looked at instead.
Lutsharel Geertruida was mentioned as an option in January, and he could be a shrewd addition when he returns to RB Leipzig from his loan spell at Sunderland, having played under Slot at Feyenoord.
