The Los Angeles Lakers are bracing for what could be one of the most transformative offseasons in recent franchise history.
With league-leading cap space projected and several key contracts nearing resolution, a significant roster reshaping appears increasingly likely.
LeBron James’ potential departure in free agency no longer feels hypothetical amid mounting reports. If he does move on, the Lakers could open up approximately $51 million in cap room, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
That projection already factors in Austin Reaves’ $20.9 million cap hold as he enters unrestricted free agency.
Lakers Face Major Free Agency Decisions Across Roster
James and Reaves are not the only names approaching the open market. Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard, Maxi Kleber, and Jaxson Hayes are also set to become unrestricted free agents.
Meanwhile, Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart each hold player options worth $8.1 million and $5.3 million, respectively, leaving further uncertainty around the roster’s direction.
Reaves is widely expected to return and is eligible for a five-year, $241 million extension. Smart, according to Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus, could opt out and potentially re-sign using the mid-level exception.
However, one departure gaining traction involves Hachimura. Lake Show Life’s Tyler Watts believes the forward is headed for what he described as a “painful divorce.”
“Rui Hachimura will join LeBron James in painfully divorcing the Lakers this summer,” Watts wrote. “Fans have seen the 6’8 forward knock down some massive shots this season, but his defensive issues have forced him to the bench.”
“Fans will be upset to see LeBron and Rui go. Kennard hasn’t yet made a massive splash in Hollywood, but his shooting will forever tantalize contending teams. Those divorces will involve some pain, but Lakers fans must suffer to be a serious title contender again.”
Through 48 games this season, Hachimura has averaged 11.7 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 50.1% from the field and a career-best 44.1% from three-point range.
Despite periods of inconsistency and minor injury setbacks, the 28-year-old has remained a steady presence in the rotation. Still, the possibility of an offseason exit appears increasingly realistic.
Lakers Preparing Aggressive Offseason Pivot Around Doncic
Watts also emphasized that the Lakers “must put rim protection, shooting, and perimeter defense around Luka Doncic.”
That philosophy aligns with recent reporting. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin have linked Los Angeles to potential pursuits of Peyton Watson, Tari Eason, and unrestricted forward Andrew Wiggins.
Armed with substantial cap flexibility, the Lakers would have the ability to present aggressive offer sheets to Watson and Eason, potentially forcing the Denver Nuggets and Houston Rockets into difficult financial decisions.
At the top of the wish list, however, remains Giannis Antetokounmpo. McMenamin has described the Milwaukee Bucks superstar as the “big prize,” while The Athletic’s Sam Amick recently reported that Los Angeles is preparing an “all-out pursuit” should the opportunity arise.
The Lakers’ trade leverage could strengthen significantly by draft night. After operating with limited movable draft capital at the deadline, Los Angeles is projected to control three tradable first-round picks in 2026, 2031, and 2033.
That increased asset pool would give the front office greater negotiating power in potential blockbuster discussions.
Whether the summer results in high-profile departures, a superstar acquisition, or a broader structural reset, the Lakers appear poised for a defining offseason that could reshape the franchise’s trajectory in the post-LeBron James era.
