Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino risks missing the World Cup with the foot injury currently keeping him out of action.

That’s according to Diario de Noticias. The Spanish newspaper covers the Arsenal midfielder today. Merino has flown to Pamplona for a recovery break as he works his way back from surgery.

The newspaper reports that Merino underwent successful surgery on a stress fracture in his right foot three weeks ago.

He travelled to Pamplona with Arsenal’s permission so he can continue his rehabilitation near his family and friends. People have spotted him in the city over the last few days, and he even attended the match between Mutilvera and Real Unión.

Arsenal give 10 days off

According to the newspaper’s information, Arsenal have given him 10 days off to visit family and friends. He’s continuing his rehabilitation during that period, though.

The Gunners want to ensure that the 29-year-old is back as soon as possible. At the moment, he ‘can’t put weight on his foot’. This has raised concerns that he could miss the World Cup this summer.

The midfielder is working tirelessly to be ready for the tournament. But for now, the rehabilitation from surgery has cast doubt on his potential inclusion.

World Cup worries

He’s definitely out of the Finalissima, the duel between the champions of Europe and America. Argentina and Spain are due to contest that on March 27th.

However, the outbreak of war between the United States, Israel and Iran could force organisers to postpone it.

Merino won’t be a part either way, as he currently can’t put weight on the injured foot. How that is being treated after surgery isn’t made clear. It is, presumably, in some sort of boot for the time being and he is likely on crutches.

Arsenal cannot be too concerned given they’ve allowed him this short break to return home. But it seems in Spain there’s concern, particularly around his inclusion in their World Cup squad.
