Liverpool missed out on Marc Guehi in the summer which could cost them £52m this year according to a new report.

Liverpool had almost a perfect transfer window in the summer of 2025, only for a blot on the copy book of Richard Hughes to be the failure to land Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

A £35m fee had been agreed, personal terms weren’t a problem, and everyone was happy, apart from Oliver Glasner, who threatened to walk when it became clear that his skipper wasn’t going to be replaced. Fast forward six-months and Guehi is a Man City player, has strengthened their defence, and their attempts to prise the Premier League title from Arsenal’s ever-weakening grasp.

Liverpool’s centre-half issues

What made the Guehi transfer collapse more painful was the decision to sell Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen without securing reinforcements. Gianluigi Leoni had been signed as a long-term prospect, however, with Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk as the only senior centre-halves, Liverpool were taking a risk. A risk that hasn’t paid off given the problems in defence and Konate’s cnotract situation still not any nearer to a conclusion.

It is a position that has already been addressed for next season with Jeremy Jacquet signed in January for £60m. The Stade Rennais stopper was pushing for a place in France’s World Cup squad, only for a shoulder injury to end his season prematurely. France’s loss will be Liverpool’s gain though with the 20-year old now set to be free to report for pre-season training from day one, which should help his transition from Ligue 1 to the Premier League.

Who are Liverpool targeting in defence next?

According to TEAMtalk’s transfer journalist Graeme Bailey, Jacquet might not be the only centre-half arrival with a shock Anfield return being considered for Quansah: “TEAMtalk can reveal that they are intensifying their assessment over a possible summer reunion, while the Reds also determined to seal a crucial second deal.

“Sources have confirmed to us that Liverpool have been at Bayer Leverkusen’s last four games, and he has impressed hugely, with the club conceding just one goal in that time. Were Quansah to show interest in returning to Anfield this summer, we understand Leverkusen would NOT stand in his way and could reluctantly agree to bring forward the arrangement, which we can confirm is worth €60m (£52.5m, $70.5m).”

Quansah has impressed in the Bundesliga and would be welcomed back to Liverpool with open arms, however, the money being used to bring him back could have been used to sign Guehi.
