From Germany: Liverpool want Michael Olise or Yan Diomande as ‘next Salah’

Liverpool are actively planning for life after Mo Salah and according to reports in Germany that has fuelled their interest in Michael Olise and Yan Diomande.

There is a sense that, though his contract runs to June 30, 2027, Salah could be playing his final season at Anfield.

After a very public row with the club earlier in the campaign the Egyptian has resumed first-choice duties under Arne Slot, but the expectation remains that he could leave in the summer amid Saudi Pro League interest.

Whether Salah departs in the coming months or next year, Liverpool will be formulating plans to sign his successor.

Sky Germany have this week doubled down on the Reds’ interest in Bayern Munich‘s Michael Olise and RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande.

While Olise, who is still only 24, is described as “highly unlikely” due to a long-term contract which does not include a release clause, that Liverpool are continually linked suggests a deal could be possible.

The Mail‘s Lewis Steele has backed up claims of their interest, writing in September that a move “cannot be ruled out,” with “the early noises” being that he “could be right at the top of their shopping list.”

Diomande is positioned as a more realistic candidate, as though Leipzig are eager to retain the 19-year-old they would be “open to negotiations” for around €100 million (£87.2m).

It has been previously reported that this lofty price tag could drop if Leipzig – currently fifth in the Bundesliga – fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

That would certainly present Liverpool with an opportunity, as Diomande’s performances throughout his debut season at the Red Bull Arena have marked him as one of the most-coveted attackers in Europe.

By scoring the winner in Sunday’s 2-1 victory at Hamburg, the Ivory Coast international brought his tally to 10 goals and seven assists in 27 games so far this season.

Meanwhile Olise has 13 goals and 25 assists in 36 appearances for Bayern this campaign, including a goal and five assists in eight Champions League games.

Both are regulars on the right but Diomande is considered a natural left winger and Olise has played a significant amount of football as a No. 10 over his spells with Reading, Crystal Palace and Bayern.

German newspaper kicker have previously claimed Olise could move for a fee in the region of €140 million (£122.2m) which, on the evidence of last summer, is no longer impossible for Liverpool.
