Liverpool have had problems at right-back all season and could address it with a £21m summer signing.

The advent of profit and sustainability regulations has seen clubs like Liverpool spend more money on younger players.

This approach gives more scope to balance the books, however, experience should still be targeted, especially in key positions where there is inconsistency and uncertainty. For Liverpool, right-back remains an issue despite the £29m signing of Jeremie Frimpong to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in the summer with Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez incapable of staying fit over a long period of time.

Liverpool linked with bargain Denzel Dumfries deal

Denzel Dumfries has been linked with Liverpool before with the Inter Milan defender consistently one of Europe’s best right-backs or wing-backs depending on where he is deployed. He has a similar attacking output to Frimpong, although the 29-year old is a better defender than his Netherlands colleague.

According to Tuttomercato, it wouldn’t break the bank to increase the Dutch contingent at Anfield: “Another situation to keep a close eye on is Dumfries. The Dutchman made his return to action against Bodo after an injury that sidelined him for three and a half months. Liverpool are still interested having already pursued him in January. His €25 million (£21.8m) release clause will remain active next summer, and can be exercised throughout the month of July. An affordable fee that certainly doesn't protect the Nerazzurri.”

Could Jeremie Frimpong leave Liverpool?

This wouldn’t spell the end for Frimpong at Liverpool, instead, it would free him up to play further forward in games where there is going to be more space. It would also mean that Gomez can be used as centre-half cover, rather than at right-back. Aside from the recent ankle complaint that Dumfries has had fixed, his injury history is nothing to worry about for a player who has played over 400 games in his career so far.

Dumfries is a low risk signing who could immediately strengthen the starting XI and add depth. Like Frimpong, if Slot wants to play Bradley or Gomez, he can be used higher up the park to good effect. He also has the athleticism and physicality needed to succeed in the Premier League. Liverpool could spend big again this summer, but they don’t need to for Dumfries given a release clause that is a pittance by modern standards.
