Arsenal should make a move for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon in the summer if they want to seriously improve their squad.

That's the verdict on former Gunners winger Anders Limpar, who feels the Newcastle United star is the ideal man for Mikel Arteta's squad.

Newcastle would be loathe to lose one of their star players, and would demand a huge fee for anyone who leaves St James' Park.

Gordon has recently dismissed speculation over his future, while head coach Eddie Howe insists the player cannot afford to focus on anything but his form for United.

However, he has again been linked with a summer move to the Emirates, and former Sweden international Limpar, who played 116 times for the Gunners in a four-year spell in North London, says the United star would be his preference if Arsenal wanted an upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

“It is tough for me to say, because I really like Martinelli," Limpar told *Bettingsidor.se. "*His work rate is fantastic.

"He is so loyal to the team and everyone wants him to create goals or assists, but he is the one first back defending.”

“He is so loyal, but Trossard has been amazing and has been playing instead of him. Personally, I think Arteta told Trossard that he wanted him to sign a new contract, but that it wasn't the plan that he should play.

"Martinelli was on the way to Saudi Arabia and then Arsenal signed Eze. He was the main target because Arteta wasn't happy with Trossard or Martinelli.

"He bought Eze to be in that spot, but if we were to speak about Anthony Gordon for that left wing spot, Gordon is one of the best players in the Premier League with his pace and everything, and he is already playing for England.

"But you will have to pay £60 million for him and I don't know if Arsenal have that kind of money.”

“But Gordon is a personal favorite of mine and it is a shame he left Everton, but he has done wonderful at Newcastle.”
