Celtic 'on list' of options for Andy Robertson as ex-Liverpool man cites key family factor

The Scotland captain is out of contract at the end of the season.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson will have Celtic ‘high on his list’ of potential destinations when his Liverpool contract comes to an end in the summer, according to a former Anfield favourite.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed a trophy-laden last nine seasons with Liverpool, winning the Champions League, two English Premier League titles, two League Cups, the FA Cup, the Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time on Merseyside, but is expected to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

While Robertson’s key focus will be on leading Scotland out at the World Cup as captain this summer, a decision over his next move will also be on the agenda, and former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson thinks his boyhood club, Celtic, will be right in the mix of clubs vying to sign him.

“If you asked me and I was Scottish and maybe a bit older than 31, I'd probably go Celtic,” said Johnson. “Win the league and sort of go out like that. If I was 27 and you could do Coventry [City] for five years, then you could sort of see the end product for the hard work pay off. Then I'd probably look more interested in that sort of route.

“Going back to the Motherland, I'm sure his family will be there, won’t they? So, I'm sure if he could go there and pick up a couple of trophies, that would be high on his to-do list. But again, I'm sure if he's available, then there are going to be quite a few options for him, I'd imagine.”

The former Hull City defender almost moved to Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window, but saw a £5million move break down when Arne Slot’s side were unable to find a replacement for him in the squad, while he was also heavily linked to Atletico Madrid in the summer. Despite Johnson’s feeling that the Scotland skipper will have one eye on a return to his hometown of Glasgow, he has urged him to extend his English Premier League career, if possible.

“Naturally, if Andy Robertson were to leave to go to a promoted club, it's technically a step back,” said Johnson. “But there aren't many steps forward from Liverpool. However, in terms of a newly promoted side that has a plan, you could understand why they'd want him for sure.

“Thinking about his experience, trophies, age, helping the youngsters around him, and giving the dressing room a boost, having a Champions League winner in the dressing room, especially when they might be in the Premier League for the first time in God knows how long. You can see how that would absolutely give them a lift.

“Whether he has the desire for that kind of challenge is something we'd have to ask him. He might want to go and play in the sun somewhere for the last few years instead, but I'd say he can answer that more accurately at the weekend. But yes, you can see why a team like Coventry or Wrexham would want him.”
