Rennes officially release statement on Jeremy Jacquet surgery

Rennes have officially released a fresh update on Jeremy Jacquet after the young defender’s injury scare last month – and it’s news Liverpool fans have been waiting on as they track their future signing.

The highly rated centre-back is due to join the Reds in the summer after a deal was struck with Rennes earlier this season, with Liverpool believed to have agreed a package worth in the region of £60m including add-ons to secure one of France’s most promising defensive prospects.

But shortly after the deal was agreed, Jacquet was forced off in the first half of Rennes’ clash with Lens on 7 February after landing awkwardly on his left shoulder while challenging for the ball. Initial reports suggested the issue could be serious, causing understandable concern on Merseyside given that Liverpool have already invested a significant fee in the teenager and view him as a long-term project for the first-team squad.

Now the French club have officially confirmed reports that the defender will undergo surgery:

“Jérémy Jacquet is set to undergo surgery,” a statement read

“On the pitch against Lens on February 7th, Jérémy Jacquet was forced to leave the game early due to a left shoulder injury. Following medical examinations, surgery has been scheduled in the coming days.”

“Stade Rennais F.C. wishes him a speedy recovery.”

While the news of surgery is never ideal, the timing at least offers a silver lining for Liverpool. With Jacquet not due to arrive at Anfield until the summer window, there is a clear pathway for the youngster to complete his rehab in France and work back towards full fitness before linking up with his new club.

The hope within both camps will be that the procedure draws a line under the issue, allowing Liverpool’s next defensive recruit to start pre-season strongly and justify the fee that has been paid to bring him in.
