Cowboys predicted to sign versatile $27 million former first-round cornerback

The Dallas Cowboys have needs all over the defense, including in the cornerbacks room.

Dallas parted ways with Trevon Diggs last season and let Jourdan Lewis leave in free agency last offseason, something owner Jerry Jones has lamented since Lewis left.

Going into 2026, Dallas is left with DaRon Bland, who has had issues staying healthy the past two seasons, and 2025 draft pick Shavon Revel, who the jury is still out on after an injury-plagued rookie campaign.

In order to remedy the situation, On SI's John Shipley predicts Dallas will sign Jacksonville Jaguars pending free-agent cornerback Greg Newsome.

"A starting-caliber cornerback, Newsome could be a strong boost to a secondary with multiple needs in the secondary," Shipley said. "The Dallas Cowboys certainly fit that billing, and Jerry Jones seems more determined than ever to actually be active in free agency. Newsome played in a scheme that is similar to what the Jaguars ran last year, too."

A former first-round pick, Newsome posted decent coverage numbers in 2025, giving up a completion rate of 62.9% and a passer rating of 100.7 when targeted.

Newsome offers versatility with his ability to play in the slot and on the boundary, which gives the Cowboys options on how to deploy him, Bland and Revel.

Spotrac projects Newsome will land a reasonable three-year, $27 million deal in free agency, which is right up Dallas' alley given their lackluster financial situation.

While Newsome isn't the big splash Cowboys fans might be hoping for, he's a solid and realistic option for Dallas to address their questionable secondary.
