Jeremy Jacquet surgery confirmed after Liverpool signing's awful injury blow left him screaming

Jeremy Jacquet picked up an injury in Rennes' defeat to Lens

Rennes have confirmed that Jeremy Jacquet is set to undergo surgery on an agonising injury he picked up shortly after signing for Liverpool.

The Reds agreed a deal during the January transfer window to sign the centre-back in a move worth £60million, including £5million in add-ons. Jacquet will officially move to in the summer after spending the rest of the season at Rennes.

However, the defender suffered a shoulder injury just days after agreeing a deal to become a Liverpool player. The 20-year-old sustained the injury during Rennes' 3-0 defeat to RC Lens on February 7. At the time, the centre-back’s issue was described as 'serious' by former Rennes head coach Hebib Beye.

And now the Ligue 1 side have confirmed that Jacquet is set to undergo surgery in the coming days, while it also appears that his season is over.

"Jérémy Jacquet is set to undergo surgery," an update from the club confirmed.

"On the pitch against Lens on February 7th, Jérémy Jacquet was forced to leave the game early due to a left shoulder injury.

"Following medical examinations, surgery has been scheduled in the coming days. Stade Rennais F.C. wishes him a speedy recovery."

On the deal to sign Jacquet, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said last month: “Very pleasing, of course, because first of all he is a very big talent – and maybe even more than ‘only’ a talent, but we speak about talent because of his age, of course.

“Second of all because we weren’t the only one interested in him, so another big compliment for the people that are working every single day so hard to sign players, that we were able to sign such a big talent.

“And [it is] another example of the model we are using at this club: so, young, very talented players, sometimes in the start of their career, sometimes already a little bit a few years into their career, but always players that are young and can improve us and help us for the short, but definitely also for the long term.

“We have signed a lot of them recently and I’ve said many times that the mid- to long-term, but even the short-term, future of this club is in a very, very, very good place.”
