Jarell Quansah: Liverpool return latest after €80m buy-back transfer claims

Jarell Quansah has been tipped for a swift return to Liverpool this summer after excelling at Bayer Leverkusen, but there is no cause to expect a 2026 transfer.

Jarell Quansah Liverpool Return Update

No 2026 move: Despite rumours of a swift return, Liverpool are not expected to re-sign Jarell Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Buy-back logistics: Widespread reports indicate the €60m (£52.3m) buy-back clause does not become active until July 2027, contradicting Sky Germany’s claims.

Long-term planning: Quansah has already pre-agreed personal terms for a potential return and the club may view him as a future successor for Virgil van Dijk.

Squad focus: With young defenders like Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet already in the pipeline, Liverpool’s 2026 transfer priority remains the forward line.

Quansah left Liverpool for Leverkusen in a deal worth £35 million in July and has cemented himself as a key player for the Bundesliga club.

After scoring a late equaliser in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Mainz the 23-year-old has been linked a summer return to Anfield, with Sky Germany claiming the Reds will activate an €80 million (£69.7m) buy-back clause.

However This Is Anfield understands there have been no such developments and Quansah is not expected to rejoin Liverpool in 2026.

Liverpool agreed a buy-back clause when negotiating the defender’s sale but there has been no official confirmation of either the fee involved or when it can be activated.

While Sky Germany have claimed it runs until May 2026, that conflicts with widespread reports upon Quansah’s move to the BayArena.

At the time, BILD were among those to report that the buy-back fee was set at €60 million (£52.3m) and would only come into effect after July 1, 2027.

Quansah is understood to have already agreed terms over the contract he would sign if Liverpool were to bring him back after two seasons at Leverkusen.

That serves to underline the club’s faith in their academy graduate, who pushed for a permanent move in the summer in pursuit of regular starting football.

Why Liverpool could still re-sign Quansah – just not this year

Liverpool players pose with the trophy after winning the premier league.

His decision has been vindicated not only due to his prominent role under Kasper Hjulmand but also that Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have remained Arne Slot‘s undisputed first-choice pairing at Liverpool.

Liverpool went on to sign 19-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma in a deal worth £26 million soon after Quansah’s exit and a deal has since been agreed for 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet to join from Rennes this summer.

While both Leoni and Jacquet are now sidelined with serious injuries that highlights the long-term plan for Slot’s defence.

Jarell Quansah Return Details (2026 Update)

Buy-Back Fee €60 million (£52.3m)

Active Date July 1, 2027

Status Personal terms & salary pre-agreed

Current Age 23 (Born: Jan 29, 2003)

Leverkusen Contract Expires June 30, 2030

The club remain in talks over an extension to Konate’s contract and if the Frenchman puts pen to paper he is likely to remain first choice in 2026/27.

Therefore while Liverpool will continue to monitor Quansah’s progress and could consider him as an option in 2027 – by which point Van Dijk will be 36 and at the end of his current contract – there is little chance of a major outlay this year.

Instead the priority is likely to be reinforcing the forward line, with doubts over Mohamed Salah‘s future beyond the current season.
