Glen Johnson reckons joining boyhood heroes Celtic could tempt Andy Robertson with the opportunity for “easier football” and to add to his trophy cabinet.
The Scotland captain’s contract at Liverpool is up in the summer before he leads his country at the World Cup and he has a decision to make after eight seasons at Anfield.
Robertson has won multiple major honours, including the Champions League and a couple of English Premier League titles, and admitted he will weigh up his future before making a decision, with the Reds keen to keep him.
The 31-year-old has been touted for a return to Parkhead after Celtic let him go as a youngster but former Liverpool and England defender Johnson believes the likes of promotion-chasing Championship sides Coventry City and Wrexham could be interested if they make it to the top flight.
Speaking to BOYLE Sports who offer the latest football odds, Johnson said: “For Andy Robertson, going back to the Motherland, I'm sure his family will be there, won't they? So, I'm sure if he could go there and pick up a couple of trophies, that would be high on his to-do list. But again, I'm sure if he's available, then there are going to be quite a few options for him, I'd imagine.
“If you asked me and I was Scottish and maybe a bit older than 31, I'd probably go Celtic, easier football, win the league and sort of go out like that. If I was 27 and you could do Coventry for five years, then you could sort of see the end product for the hard work pay off. Then I'd probably look more interested in that sort of route.

“But potentially to get like, they would obviously struggle because newly promoted teams do struggle. So you have that sort of heartache every week and when you're at the end of your career, it could be taxing.
“Naturally, if Andy Robertson were to leave to go to a promoted club, it's technically a step back, but there aren't many steps forward from Liverpool. However, in terms of a newly promoted side that has a plan, you could understand why they'd want him for sure.
“Thinking about his experience, trophies, age, helping the youngsters around him, and giving the dressing room a boost, having a Champions League winner in the dressing room, especially when they might be in the Premier League for the first time in God knows how long. You can see how that would absolutely give them a lift.
“Whether he has the desire for that kind of challenge is something we'd have to ask him. He might want to go and play in the sun somewhere for the last few years instead, but I'd say he can answer that more accurately at the weekend. But yes, you can see why a team like Coventry or Wrexham would want him.”
Meanwhile, Johnson admitted he’d have liked a crack at Scottish football - with the other half of the Old Firm. He said: “Again, it's all about timing, right? Obviously, Rangers is a big, iconic club. The Old Firm games, of course, are great, but you only have a few of them a year, so I wouldn't be going just for that.

“It's all about timing. You know, I was never going to leave Liverpool to go to Rangers, put it that way. But if I was young and went on loan or something, then of course. Or if I was at the end of my career, then great.
“It's hard to say in hindsight because obviously I'm happy with what I did and the clubs I played for. But yeah, if the time was right, yeah, I probably would have enjoyed it.”
