Andyc Robertson will have Celtic ‘high on his list’ of potential destinations when his Liverpool contract comes to an end in the summer, according to former teammate Glen Johnson.
The 31-year-old has enjoyed great success with Liverpool, but is expected to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.
The Scotland captain will have his sights set on leading the nation to their first World Cup in 28 years this summer, but a decision over his next move will also be on the agenda.
Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson thinks that Robertson’s boyhood club, Celtic, will be right in contention for his signature. He said (via the Scotsman):
“If you asked me and I was Scottish and maybe a bit older than 31, I’d probably go Celtic.
“Win the league and sort of go out like that. If I was 27 and you could do Coventry [City] for five years, then you could sort of see the end product for the hard work pay off. Then I’d probably look more interested in that sort of route.
“Going back to the Motherland, I’m sure his family will be there, won’t they? So, I’m sure if he could go there and pick up a couple of trophies, that would be high on his to-do list. But again, I’m sure if he’s available, then there are going to be quite a few options for him, I’d imagine.”
Andy Robertson
It is easy to see the logic.
Robertson came through Celtic’s youth academy before being released and rebuilding his career at Queen’s Park in 2009. From there he climbed quickly: Dundee United, Hull City, then Liverpool, where he became one of the best full-backs in Europe.
Celtic were the starting point. They have never been the destination.
For a player who has ticked every box in England and Europe, the idea of coming back to Glasgow and lifting trophies in his own colours carries weight. It is not about proving anything now. It is about legacy and timing.
There are practical questions—wages, competition, and whether Liverpool would truly let him walk for nothing. There will be interest elsewhere, Johnson is right on that.
But Celtic do not often get this kind of opportunity. A Scotland captain, still playing at the top level, with genuine ties to the club.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, part of that 2019 European Cup-winning side, is already at Parkhead until at least the summer, with an option for another year. The dressing room would not be unfamiliar.
For now, it is speculation. Yet if Robertson does leave Anfield, Celtic will not be bystanders.
They will be watching closely, and so will the support.
