Why Chelsea are saying their financial situation is fine despite posting £355m losses last week - journalist

Chelsea hit the headlines last week when they posted a pre-tax loss of £355m when UEFA published the accounts of sides from the 2024-25 season.

Todd Boehly and co stayed on the right side of the law in England with the sale of their women’s team, although this is one of a number of loopholes which isn’t recognised by UEFA.

Chelsea had to sell players to register new signings such as Joao Pedro and Estevao Willian for this season’s Champions League, however the latest numbers will no doubt spark fear for future sanctions.

The Blues were penalised by UEFA before the season even began, and Matt Slater has told The Athletic FC podcast that Chelsea are calm on the matter because of their ongoing business plan with the federation as a result of their sanction.

He said: “I just think, you know, they’re on a business plan with UEFA. That’s one of the other reasons why they are sort of exuding calm and they’re saying, nothing to see here.

“We did get punished by UEFA and we agreed a settlement, which included this fine and we are sticking to a business plan and as long as the loss they’ve just booked, that was only just announced by UEFA last week, is kind of what we told UEFA was coming and the direction of travel is good, we’ll be okay.

“And I’m going to take Chelsea at their word that one, they’re okay on PSR and I think I know that because I’m sort of hearing that from the Premier League too.”

As a result of Chelsea’s sanction by UEFA, they have to essentially break even over the next three years in order to not see further punishment applied.

This is going to require the club to continue to sell players if they are looking to add new names to the squad, although up to now none of their big names have been forced to depart.

Financial expert Adam Williams has exclusively tipped some big names to leave though, and with speculation seemingly non-stop regarding Cole Palmer’s future, it is easy to see why some Chelsea fans are fearing the worst.
