_“Comparison is the thief of joy.” - Kyrie Irving (quoting Teddy Roosevelt)_
It’s Hugo Gonzalez day on CelticsBlog today! I’m stealing this topic from a couple of sources. The Group Chat guys were doing player comps for all the top rookies (they glazed over Hugo at the end). Also, Bobby Manning threw this out as a topic on twitter.
Someone mentioned Josh Hart. Some other folks mentioned Alex Caruso. Others brought up Tony Allen and even Draymond Green. A lot of people brought up Manu Ginóbili, but I wonder if that is mostly because they are both from Europe. I mean, if nothing else Hugo has much better hair.
My comps are probably show my Celtics funnel-vision but I think of Derrick White and Marcus Smart. Hugo is bigger than both. In terms of temperament or vibes, White and Smart are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Or if you put them on the 9 moral alignments chart, Smart would be “chaotic good,” White would be “lawful good” and perhaps Hugo would be “neutral good.”
The disclaimer on this always has to be that no comparisons are perfect. Just mentioning some names will trigger some people into spasmic affronted retorts. But this is all in good fun and should be approached appropriately.
**So tell us, who does Hugo remind you of? What’s your player comparison for him? Feel free to add as many disclaimers and qualifiers as you like.**
