Rams linked to $54 million Chiefs Super Bowl champion CB amid major need

The Los Angeles Rams are expected to get Matthew Stafford back for at least one more season. That means one thing: it's time to go all-in.

While the Rams do need to plan for 2027 and beyond, in Stafford's potentially final season, the Rams need to go all-in for a Super Bowl run. Adding help at cornerback is a must this offseason if they plan to go all-in.

According to Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated, the Rams are one potential landing spot for a Kansas City Chiefs cornerback who has Super Bowl experience and who could cost $54 million on a free agent deal.

Rams linked to $54M Chiefs veteran CB

"Jaylen Watson, CB, Chiefs. Projected contract: Three years, $54 million," Verderame writes. "Potential landing spots: Giants, Rams."

The Rams need to address their cornerback room this offseason, as the majority of their cornerbacks are hitting free agency or are cut candidates.

While there might be more of a focus on Trent McDuffie from the Chiefs' defense at cornerback, Watson has been a fantastic corner as well during his time in Kansas City.

The 27-year-old seventh-round pick from 2022, Watson, has started 29 games over the last four years for the Chiefs. He's recored three interceptions (one pick-six) and two more interceptions in the playoffs.

He's coming off the best year of his career, where he recorded two interceptions, six passes defended, two sacks, 64 total tackles, three tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits. Those are all either the best or tied for the best he's had in a season.

When targeted in coverage, quarterbacks had a 79 passer rating, which, for Watson, is a very strong mark. While it's not the best of his career (75.4 in 2024), it was still a very good season.

This $54 million projected contract over three seasons would be $18 million per-year. That's not a small amount, but with the Rams ready to go all-in, that type of contact would be worth it to bring in a player for a very big position of need this offseason.
