Paul Scholes has been discussing Arsenal’s title tilt as they attempt to keep Manchester City at bay.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has issued a strange claim about this season’s Premier League title race. Arsenal still have a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League, but the title is not just in their hands.

Manchester City are five points worse off but with a game in hand and with Arsenal still to play, meaning they can also win the title as long as they take care of their own business.

The race should get even more exciting over the coming weeks, and it is up to Arsenal to hold their nerve, given they currently lead the race. But according to Scholes, no one deserves to win the title this season.

He said on The Good, The Bad & The Football: “If I had to pick one of them, it would be [Man] City, but I know every team whoever wins a league, you say at the end of it they deserved it. I am struggling to find which team.

“Do you know what I mean? None of them have convinced me that they should be Premier League champions. I don’t think they should give the trophy out this year.”

A strange claim from Scholes

This is a silly claim from Scholes. First of all, are we saying Manchester United were always at their best when winning the title? There are always better and worse years.

Beyond that, Arsenal have lost just three of their 29 games, conceding less than a goal per game on average, with just 22 let in so far. There is work still to do, but if Arsenal finish the job, it’s tough to see how anyone can make the argument that they wouldn’t deserve it.

This is an Arsenal squad bursting with quality, and it’s one that has - for the most part - been working towards winning the title for the last few years. In terms of quality, overcoming adversity and standing up to the pressure of a top-class opponent in Manchester City, there is no real argument.

And as for if Man City win the title, just look at the form they have been in to close the gap on an almost faultless Arsenal side. Their credentials speak for themselves, and just the achievement of outrunning this superb Arsenal side would make them deserving in itself.

It’s a strange comment from Scholes, and especially from someone who knows how hard it is to win the Premier League title.
