Liverpool stance on bringing £52m man back to the club revealed

Liverpool have no plans to re-sign Jarell Quansah this summer, GIVEMESPORT understands. The Bayer Leverkusen defender is a player still in the club's thinking, but a move back to Anfield in summer 2026 is not anticipated.

Quansah completed a transfer to the Bundesliga side in July for a fee of £35million and his contract contains a buyback clause worth in the region of £52million.

The clause is valid this summer despite suggestions it can only be triggered in 2027, but Liverpool have taken no steps to bring Quansah back.

Why Liverpool Inserted Buyback Clause Into Jarrell Quansah Deal

The expectation is captain Virgil van Dijk will stay with the club until at least 2027, when his current contract expires, while Liverpool remain in talks with Ibrahima Konate over a contract extension. No breakthrough has been reached to date.

Quansah came through Liverpool's Academy after joining the club in 2008 and made 58 appearances for Liverpool prior to his move to Germany. He won the Premier League last season in Arne Slot's first season in charge.

Quansah has impressed for Leverkusen since leaving Anfield making 32 appearances and scoring four times, and won his first England cap in November in England's World Cup qualifier against Albania.

GMS understands Liverpool are not planning to trigger the buyback clause this summer, but the whole point of it is to give them a long-term option to bring Quansah back to Anfield. This possibility is certainly not ruled out, but currently more likely in 2027 and beyond.

Liverpool Have Already Signed A Defender This Summer

Liverpool are already set to welcome Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet this summer in a deal worth £55million with a further £5million in potential add-ons. And the highly-rated Giovanni Leoni will be back from his ACL injury next season.

Jaquet's arrival means Liverpool well well-stocked at centre-back, but if Konate departs another defender is not ruled out.

The Reds beat off competition from Chelsea to secure the signing of Jacquet, who comes to the Premier League highly-rated. Jacquet remained at Rennes for the rest of the season before joining Liverpool in the summer, but his season looks to have been cut short.

The defender went off with a shoulder injury in the game with Lens last month and has undergone surgery as a result. He is likely to miss the rest of the season.
