Celtics sign 25-year-old rookie guard to assist Jaylen Brown

The Boston Celtics completed a two-way signing on Sunday with the same asset they offered a 10-day contract to in late February.

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the franchise inked a new deal with a 25-year-old rookie guard to help Jaylen Brown.

“The Boston Celtics have now signed John Tonje to a two-way contract,” Scotto reported Sunday.

Before signing a 10-day contract with the Celtics last month, Tonje was eagerly awaiting his debut in the big leagues. The Wisconsin product was selected by the Utah Jazz late in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft (No. 55 overall pick) but failed to appear in a game with Utah.

Tonje did make a lasting impression with the Jazz’s G-League affiliate (Salt Lake City Stars, averaging 17.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game in 14 outings, shooting 50.9% from the field and 41.0% from beyond the arc.

On Feb. 5, the Jazz traded Tonje to the Celtics for Chris Boucher and a future second-round pick. Unlike the Jazz, Boston has given the North Omaha, Nebraska native a chance to contribute in the most competitive basketball league in the world.

Tonje hasn’t been effective in the three games he’s participated in, though, only recording two points and two rebounds in 11 minutes. Still, it appears Boston will give Tonje additional chances to prove he can be a serviceable asset with the Celtics.
