Stefon Diggs' cap hit and off-the-field situation make him a cut candidate, but even if the Patriots keep him, they could use another reliable target. Romeo Doubs' time with the Green Bay Packers has seemingly come to an end, and the Patriots could be a great team for him to join.
If the Patriots lose Diggs, Doubs has the talent to be a true No. 1 receiver for the Patriots. He has been held back by Green Bay's receiver-by-committee approach and offensive scheme. However, he is a solid route runner with good hands and the ability to make plays down the field. If Diggs stays, Doubs would be an elite No. 2 option, who would benefit greatly from facing weaker coverages than Diggs.
Doubs has 2,424 yards in four seasons and 21 touchdowns. He has a 100.3 passer rating when targeted. He also had 371 yards and two touchdowns in four playoff games. It can be argued that he has been the most consistent receiver for the Packers since he was drafted. However, the Packers' scheme has helped keep his price tag low by not allowing him to rack up monster numbers.
He has never had a 100-target season, which is something plenty of other receivers have the benefit of. On the Patriots, his targets would certainly increase, and so would his receiving totals. He would be a steady presence for Maye in games where Diggs is taken away by defenses.
Doubs is a proven playoff performer as well. Diggs did not play well in the playoffs last season, and having Doubs would have helped. He is only 25 and can be a great player for any team. He will be cheaper than other free agent receivers like Alec Pierce, Wan'Dale Robinson or Mike Evans, who all have 1,000-yard seasons under their belts. However, if given the same opportunities as those guys, Doubs may have been the best free-agent wide receiver on the market.
