The summer transfer move which could see Liverpool become title challengers again next season

Liverpool look set to return to the drawing board this summer as they figure out how to turn Arne Slot’s faltering side back into Premier League title challengers next season.

The Reds have begun to find form as of late but are still barely clinging onto fifth spot in the league, which looks set to earn Champions League football next term as things stand. Reaching that competition for next season – either via league position or through winning this campaign’s edition – is the minimum remit for Slot after his side’s record-smashing £450million spend over the summer.

The British transfer record was broken twice in a matter of months as first Florian Wirtz arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £116m, before Alexander Isak swapped Newcastle for Merseyside for £125m on Deadline Day. Wirtz has begun to find his feet after a slow start while Isak has struggled with injury for practically the entirety of his time at Anfield. Despite these struggles, Liverpool might just break the transfer record once again this summer.

Liverpool linked with stunning move for PSG star

As per reports by TEAMtalk, Liverpool are considering launching a ‘record-breaking bid’ for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Joao Neves, who has been described as the Parisians’ ‘crown jewel’ but could soon light up the Premier League at Anfield.

Neves was linked with Manchester United prior to his signing for PSG for £60m in 2024, and his value has risen significantly since then as the 21-year-old continues to develop into one of the best midfielders in world football.

Reporting states that Liverpool could make a ‘mind-blowing’ offer worth €150m-€160m (up to £140m) for the Portugal international this summer to prise him away from the French capital. This would mean that the Reds have smashed the British transfer record three times within the space of 12 months.

Slot’s side could be joined in the race for Neves by Chelsea and Real Madrid, while it remains to be seen whether the former Benfica youth product would be open to departing Ligue 1 – having already reaching the proverbial top of the mountain at PSG with their Champions League triumph last season. Could he be open to a new challenge?

Neves could transform Liverpool if he arrives at Anfield

Whether it would be financially sensible for Liverpool to break the British transfer record for a third time in such a short period is one question, but from a footballing sense, Neves might just be the ideal signing they have been looking for.

The 2004-born gem is known for dominating the centre of the park alongside Vitinha at the Parc des Princes but is still adding new facets to his game. Neves is famed for his energy in midfield and his tough-tackling approach, while he is becoming an increasing threat at the other end and adding goals to his repertoire. He has scored six goals in 24 appearances for PSG this term and bagged his first career hat-trick in August against Toulouse, before repeating the same feat for Portugal against Armenia in November.

Liverpool were one of the hardest-working and most dynamic sides in Europe under Jurgen Klopp but have seen issues in the middle of the park in Slot’s second season at the club, with notable dips in the performances of the likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch. There is little doubt that Neves would arrive and instantly elevate the Reds’ midfield unit, capable of playing across multiple positions and making a decisive impact on games. If the desired transfer fee becomes viable for Liverpool this summer, and that is a big if – then they should try all in their power to make this deal happen.
