Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo prepare for the Super Bowl in 2023.

With the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine now in the books, the Kansas City Chiefs will look to strengthen their roster over the next two months as the draft looms.

The free agent legal tampering periods begins Monday, meaning teams can agree to contract terms before becoming official when the new league year starts. Before then, you can expect some trades to get done around the league.

The Chiefs could be among those who do some dealing. Brett Veach has been aggressive throughout his tenure as Kansas City’s general manager, so it can’t be ruled out. On Tuesday a player of a huge position of need for the Chiefs was placed on the trade block.

Could the Kansas City Chiefs make an offer for Minnesota Vikings Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard?

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Vikings are open to trading Greenard in order to make some salary cap space.

Greenard was a third-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2020. He had a breakout season in 2021, recording eight sacks, four passes defensed, and two forced fumbles. Unfortunately, his time in Houston was riddled by injuries, but he did finish strong for the team in 2023 by racking up 12.5 sacks.

Greenard signed a four-year, $76 million contract with the Vikings in 2024, and made an instant impact. He racked up another 12.5 sacks, as well as a career high 59 tackles and four forced fumbles, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. However, the injury bug bit Greenard again in 2025, as his season ended prematurely due to shoulder surgery.

Fellow ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that Minnesota is seeking a Day 2 pick for Greenard. Kansas City has selections in both the second and third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, which take place on Day 2. If they feel as though a proven veteran would make more of an impact than a rookie, the Chiefs could make a play for Greenard.

Examining needs along the Chiefs’ defensive line

Chris Jones

It’s no secret that Kansas City’s defensive line needs a major boost. Multi-time All-Pro Chris Jones is a great place to start, but he needs help. Jones will be 32 years old at the beginning of next season, and has spent the past couple years facing constant double and triple-teams. Pairing him with another credible pass rushing threat will be crucial to extend his career.

The Chiefs released veteran defensive end Mike Danna for salary cap savings, and Charles Omenihu isn’t expected to return. George Karlaftis has show flashes during his four-year career in Kansas City, but consistency has been an issue. However, he isn’t goin anywhere after signing a four-year, $93 million contract extension last year.

The Chiefs selected defensive linemen Omarr Norman-Lott and Ashton Gillotte in last year’s draft, and while both showed some promise, they can’t be counted on as solutions. After ranking second in the NFL in sacks in 2022 and 2023, Kansas City fell to 19th in 2024 and 25th in 2025. If the Chiefs are going to quickly return to being Super Bowl contenders, fixing the pass rush will be crucial.
