The Denver Broncos finished the 2025 season ranked 16th in rushing yards, so their efforts to swing a trade for David Montgomery and continued connections to Breece Hall track. But the Broncos struck out on the former and would need to trade for the latter.

There is another option: Super Bowl champion and game MVP Kenneth Walker III.

The Broncos will likely face significant competition for Walker’s services, but the path to signing him got much clearer on Tuesday nonetheless.

Walker, a second-round pick in the 2022 draft by the Seattle Seahawks, is coming off an award-winning and Super Bowl-winning season, and the Broncos have a glaring void at running back that they have actively tried to fill.

ESPN’s Peter Schrager called the Broncos “a team to watch” in the “sweepstakes” for Walker.

Schrager noted that Walker’s situation was “interesting” in light of the tailback hiring a new agent before the playoffs, “striking gold” ahead of what should be a “ripe” market.

“Seattle could still be very much involved in this. Even if they don’t franchise tag him, they would just want to negotiate as a free agent. The other two teams, obviously, everyone’s thrown around are the Giants and the Chiefs,” Schrager said on “Get Up” on March 2.

“The Denver Broncos, who have an excellent defense, excellent special teams, and RJ Harvey as a young running back, that would be one of those Yin and Yang, put-those-guys-together-type deals. Thunder and Lightning. Kenneth Walker will have a market.”

The Broncos have three backs under contract for 2026.

Former Dallas Cowboys draft pick Deuce Vaughn and ex-undrafted free agent Cody Schrader are in the mix. However, veteran and 2025 leading rusher J.K. Dobbins is a free agent and coming off a significant injury.

Walker is wrapping up his rookie deal with the Seahawks, who have made no bones about letting him hit free agency, where teams like the Broncos loom.

Walker took another step toward free agency and, potentially, the Broncos on Tuesday.

“Sources: the Seattle Seahawks are not expected to tag Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, who now is poised to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year opens,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on X on March 3.

“With Kenneth Walker not expected to be tagged, there’s a chance he could become just the fourth player to win Super Bowl MVP and begin the following season with a different team.”

Sportrac projected Walker’s market value at $9 million annually and a four-year, $36 million deal as an example. That would put him over the $8 million average former Broncos back Javonte Williams got in his three-year extension with the Cowboys this offseason.

Walker rushed for over 1,000 yards for the second time in his career this past season.

He was a star for the Seahawks with 135 yards on the ground in the Super Bowl. Walker’s dual-threat skill set would allow the Broncos to utilize him with Harvey on the field together.
