Browns cut ties with veteran offensive lineman to save $2 million

This offseason, the Cleveland Browns need to find ways to clear money off their books to have the resources needed to make big signings in free agency.

While the big moves will come with contract adjustments for Deshaun Watson and Denzel Ward, there are some cuts the Browns can make to save even more money.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Browns are making one such cut a week before the new league year begins. Fowler is reporting the Browns are cutting ties with a veteran journeyman offensive lineman to save $2 million in cap space.

Browns cut ties with veteran OL to save $2 million

"Browns are releasing OT Cornelius Lucas, per source," Fowler reports. "Move saves Cleveland around $2 million in cap space."

The Browns have a lot of work to do this offseason, especially along the offensive line. But cutting Cornelius Lucas will help clear the way for better additions.

Lucas is a 34-year-old journeyman lineman who's played for six different teams in his 12-year NFL career. He made five starts for the Browns this past season and played in 10 games total.

Across the last 12 years, Lucas has made 59 starts while appearing in 139 games. He's not a consistent starter, nor is he someone who was going to compete for a starting job in 2026 for the Browns.

Despite his impact not being much for the Browns on the field, cutting ties this offseason, he brings a nice benefit. His release will bring around $2 million in cap savings.

While the Browns aren't saving a ton of money with this move, it's still worth saving as much as possible when possible.

Whether it's for top-flight offensive line free agents or an elite wide receiver, the Browns need a lot of money to spend this offseason.
