Why Benjamin Sesko didn't join Chelsea in 2022 before Man United move - report

Benjamin Sesko is rivalling Joao Pedro as the most in-form summer signing in the Premier League right now, however there was a prospect that the two both could have ended up at Chelsea.

The Blues will be pleased with the addition of Pedro to their squad, even if there is internal concern at Liam Delap’s progress since his move to Stamford Bridge.

Way before these two cropped up on the club’s radar though, there was a real push to sign Sesko back in 2022 from RB Leipzig.

Benjamin Sesko thought it was too early to join Chelsea in 2022

Todd Boehly was playing the role of sporting director at the club at the time, and according to The Sun, Chelsea were willing to offer the young striker ‘whatever he wanted’ in order to secure his signature.

The report goes on to say however that he turned down a move to West London upon advice from his advisor at the time, believing that it would be too early for him to make that move.

This came during the first transfer window where the new owners were at the club, when they spent large transfer fees on the likes of Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella and Raheem Sterling.

It is likely that Sesko would have played second fiddle in the Chelsea side at the time to the likes of Kai Havertz and Joao Felix, in a season where the Blues drastically underperformed.

Fast forward to now, Sesko has six goals in seven appearances for United, despite only starting on two of those occasions.

Chelsea players to have been sent off

This upturn in form for the summer signing has coincided with things going wrong for Chelsea in the Premier League.

They currently sit outside the top five places, who are all expected to qualify for next season’s Champions League, with United one of those sides who have leapfrogged them in the table.

Chelsea will meanwhile be relying on their own summer signing in the form of Pedro for the huge game on Wednesday night against Aston Villa, another rival for the top five.
