One of the most coveted pending free agents at wide receiver is now on track to officially hit the open market.
According to James Boyd of The Athletic, the Colts are placing the transition tag on quarterback Daniel Jones, which means wide receiver Alec Pierce is now slated to become a free agent on March 11.
"The Colts are placing the transition tag on QB Daniel Jones," Boyd reported. "WR Alec Pierce is set to become an unrestricted free agent."
The Colts were hoping to sign Jones to a long-term deal and use the tag on Pierce, but a stalemate with Jones in contract talks forced them to use the tag on the quarterback.
Of course, there is still a chance the Colts can reach an agreement with Pierce before the aforementioned date, but it seems as though Pierce wants to test the market, where he's going to draw a ton of interest and make a ton of money.
If so, that's great news for the Las Vegas Raiders, Buffalo Bills and Washington Commanders, all of whom need wide receiver help.
The cupboard is almost bare in Las Vegas, which is particularly troubling with the Raiders set to draft Fernando Mendoza at No. 1 overall.
2025 draft picks Dont'e Thornton and Jack Bech remain unproven and Tre Tucker, who is really a No. 3 wideout, is the only somewhat established target in the room.
In Buffalo, the failures of Keon Coleman and Joshua Palmer leave the Bills in a precarious spot, with the team sporting Khalil Shakir and not much else.
For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, that is not going to cut it.
In Washington, the pending free-agent status of Deebo Samuel means the Commanders might need more help opposite Terry McLaurin.
On top of adding a running mate for McLaurin, the Commanders also need more depth.
The Commanders and Raiders are in the best position to pay Pierce the big bucks he's going to command, with Las Vegas having $88.1 million in cap space and the Commanders having $70.3 million.
Meanwhile, Buffalo still has some work to do to get under the salary cap, with the Bills sitting at $8.2 million over.
