Jones shared videos of the gathering on social media where he was seen throwing snowballs with a large crowd of locals. While the athlete appeared to be enjoying his offseason, the event quickly became a source of political tension.

The gathering turned aggressive when some participants began targeting New York Police Department officers. Reports indicate that individuals threw ice and heavy snow at police. This led to injuries for two officers who required medical treatment for head and face wounds.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch responded to the violence bystating, “The NYPD is aware of certain videos taken earlier today in Washington Square Park showing individuals attacking cops. I want to be very clear: The behavior depicted is disgraceful, and it is criminal. Our detectives are investigating this matter.” One man was arrested during the confrontation.

The incident created a public disagreement between the police department and Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The Mayor chose to minimize the severity of the conflict. Hedescribed the situation as a “snowball fight that got out of hand” and suggested that the participants were simply having fun.
This comment angered the Police Benevolent Association. Union president Patrick Hendry called the mayor’s response “very disturbing” and argued that the officers deserved more support.
Mac Jones remains key depth for the 49ers roster
While the viral video brought Mac Jones into the news, his professional future remains focused on San Francisco. During the 2025 season, Jones proved to be a reliable backup for starting quarterback Brock Purdy.
When Purdy suffered an injury, Jones started eight games and finished with a winning record of five wins and three losses. He achieved a career-high completion rate of nearly seventy percent during that period.
General Manager John Lynch has expressed confidence in the quarterback. Lynchtold reporters, “He’s really good for us and we value that,” and confirmed that the team plans to keep him for the 2026 season. Jones currently has a manageable salary cap hit of about $3 million.
This makes him a valuable asset for the team as they prepare for the upcoming year. Even though other teams might be interested in trading for him, the 49ers prefer to keep a proven winner in their backup position. Jones will likely continue his role as the primary support for the offense when training camp begins later this summer.
