Former Liverpool star Stephen Warnock was not impressed with Liverpool's first-half performance against Wolves and reminded Arne Slot of his comments earlier this week.

The Reds went into Tuesday's game hoping to boost their chances of securing Champions League qualification. They started the day three points behind both Manchester United in third and Aston Villa in fourth, and three points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea.

Yet Liverpool struggled to break down Wolves, the Premier League's bottom-placed team, during the first half. Slot's players didn't even register a shot on target until around the 35th minute, when Dominik Szoboszlai — who debuted his bold new haircut at Molineux — unleashed a tame effort at Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Warnock covered Tuesday's game at Molineux for BBC Radio 5 Live. "We've had a really organized Wolves team and Liverpool team who don't seem capable of breaking them down at this moment in time," said the former defender during the first half.

And Warnock's criticism didn't stop there. He soon added: "Liverpool are the better team on paper, but they're not showing that will and desire to try and get into those top places.

"Tonight is a great opportunity to put a marker down and put pressure on those other teams, but they're not showing it."

Warnock then sent a clear message to Slot about his comments the other day, in which the Liverpool boss criticized modern soccer's reliance on set pieces.

"It's safe, isn't it?" Warnock asked. "Everything is safe at the moment from Liverpool's point of view. It's just backwards, sideways.

"What did Arne Slot say this week? He's a bit bored of football? And his team aren't entertaining tonight, that's for sure."

Warnock continued: "I just hope the half-time pies are good because that has been difficult to watch... From a Liverpool point of view, so slow, so boring to watch, and that has been a tough watch. Hopefully, it will be a big improvement in the second half."

Speaking about set pieces on Tuesday, Slot said: "I think it's mainly here in the Premier League. If I watch other leagues, I don't think there's so much emphasis on set-pieces."

The Dutchman added: "Do I like it? My football heart doesn't like it.

"If you ask me about football, I think about the Barcelona team from 10, 15 years ago. Every Sunday evening, you were hoping they would play.

"Now, most of the games I see in the Premier League are not, for me, a joy to watch, but it's always interesting because it's so competitive. That is what makes this league great because there is so much competitiveness. Everyone can win against everyone."
