Opinion: Four biggest winners and one loser as Everton beat Burnley 2-0

Everton have made it back-to-back victories with three points against Burnley on Tuesday evening.

The dreadful run of form at the Hill Dickinson Stadium has finally come to an end, with Everton securing a 2-0 win over the Clarets.

It was one of the best performances of the season from David Moyes’ side, with the Toffees dominant from the very first minute.

Goals from James Tarkowski and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall got the job done as the Everton fans were sent home happy from the new stadium for the first time in three months.

Who was your Man of the Match as Everton end their Hill Dickinson curse? 🤩

It was a night where Everton were winners, but there were some standout performers and even one player who could be considered as a loser.

Winners

James Garner

As the weeks go by, Everton’s decision to reward James Garner with a new contract looks better and better.

Yet another fantastic delivery into the box for one of the Everton centre-backs to get their heads on as Tarkowski opened the scoring.

Moyes has admitted he wants to keep Garner in midfield, having recently resorted to using him at right-back during Jake O’Brien’s suspension.

Garner displayed his leadership on the pitch as he didn’t hesitate from ordering his teammates about; he is showing all the signs of a future Everton captain.

James Tarkowski

After watching Jarrad Branthwaite score at the weekend, Tarkowski got a goal for himself with a great header from Garner’s free-kick.

It was the defender’s first goal of the season and it came just as Everton were in need of a moment of magic to break the deadlock.

Tarkowski cleverly avoided blocking Branthwaite’s goal at the weekend and he was rewarded with his own against the Clarets.

Dwight McNeil

There were a lot of people confused by McNeil’s involvement at the weekend, myself included, but he deserves a lot of credit.

Moyes has urged McNeil to forget his failed transfer and the 26-year-old has shown some real quality over the last two games.

Another key role in Everton’s second goal, with a delightful touch keeping the move alive before Ndiaye played in the goalscorer, Dewsbury-Hall.

Walked off to a fully deserved standing ovation.

Iliman Ndiaye

Deserved a goal of his own, but he was forced to settle for providing the assist for Dewsbury-Hall.

After Moyes admitted Ndiaye looked tired on the back of AFCON, Ndiaye is finally back up to speed.

The Senegal international was a real issue for Burnley having completed three of his attempted five dribbles.

With Jack Grealish out for the season, this is the level Everton need Ndiaye to be at if they stand any chance of European qualification.

Loser

Jake O’Brien

This was perhaps Everton’s most dominant game of the season, with the Toffees ending the match having enjoyed 56% of the possession.

However, Jake O’Brien was still unable to get himself up the pitch and show any real kind of attacking quality.

With McNeil impressing, the Ireland international was not exactly needed to push up, but an attacking right-back would have relished the opportunity to overlap McNeil, who constantly cut inside.

Everton are eyeing a new right-back, with O’Brien’s long-term future clearly at centre-back.
