Former Claret James Tarkowski opened the scoring for the home side with a header from another set piece, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall doubled that lead shortly after half-time.

Parker’s side were unable to muster any sort of response, prompting angry reactions from the away end who once again chanted “we want Parker out”, as well as booing the substitution of Hannibal followed by a rendition of “you don’t know what you’re doing”.

Summarising his thoughts on Burnley’s meek display, Parker said: “I think anger, I think confusion and trying to probably analyse exactly the reason for the performance really.

“We were way short and were never really in the game. In every aspect of our game tonight, we were just way, way short really.

“With the ball, duels, yeah, we never got going tonight. Many things are going through my head at this present moment in time, coming out the weekend and the emotional fatigue maybe, I probably need to reflect a little bit tonight and look back on it.”

Burnley fans were particularly angry about their side’s lack of a game plan, having looked passive and weak from the start.

The visitors opted to sit back and soak up pressure, yet never looked like posing any problems on the counter, only inviting more and more pressure.

When asked to explain what the game plan was, Parker added: “Well, like always, the game plan was similar to the game plan that we went to Crystal Palace and obviously got a result.

“We went to Chelsea and got a result and that didn't materialise for one reason or another. But yeah, we lacked something tonight.”

To compound Burnley’s woes, the first goal they conceded came from another set piece, just as was the case against Brentford on Saturday.

“That was really disappointing. Really, really disappointing,” he said.

“Poor defending and at that moment, as poor as we were in the first half, you want to try and get to half-time and to concede at the set-play goal was hugely disappointing.”
