Opinion: Everton now have a genuine chance of breaking a 13-year record over Liverpool

Everton ended their winless run at the Hill Dickinson Stadium against Burnley on Tuesday evening.

Idrissa Gana Gueye was a standout performer, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was also excellent in the 2-0 victory.

Everton are very well-placed to qualify for Europe, as they closed the gap to just one point on seventh-placed Brentford.

In fact, the Toffees are now only five points behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool, who currently occupy fifth place.

Arne Slot’s men suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to relegation favourites Wolves, which could allow a 13-year record to end this season.

Everton could genuinely finish above Liverpool for the first time since 2013

Everton haven’t finished above Liverpool in the Premier League table since the 2012/13 season, which was Moyes’ final year in charge before he departed for Manchester United.

The Toffees finished sixth that year, whilst Brendan Rodgers’ men languished behind them in seventh.

Since then, Liverpool have had the bragging rights, as they’ve finished above Everton for 12 consecutive campaigns.

That could end this year, though, as Slot’s side have been incredibly inconsistent. They may have one eye on the Champions League, too, thus taking their focus off the league.

Everton still have Liverpool to play, with that fixture taking place at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on April 18th.

There will be a lot riding on that Merseyside Derby, and perhaps for the first time in 13 years, it could determine which club finishes higher.

Who would’ve thought that could be the case this time last year when the Toffees were in a relegation battle?

What a job Moyes is doing.
