LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers has been the subject of criticism for his comments made about Israel at the 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend.

Former NBA All-Star Tim Hardaway Sr. showed little respect to LeBron James by naming players from his era above the icon. Both Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway were named by one of Hardaway’s hosts during a discussion about incredible talents who had their prime shortened due to injury. James is often considered at worst a top-two all-time player in NBA history, but Hardaway showed that not all former players fully believe that.

Hardaway said the following on The Crossover Podcast:

“Penny had better defense. Yes (I would take Penny and Grant Hill over LeBron) in their prime. Yeah, I’m taking both of them if it’s in their prime. Get up (as his co-host pretends to walk off set). I want to see you leave because you don’t even know who cooked Shaq.”

The former Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors point guard accomplished a lot in the league during his great career. However, most fans would say that LeBron did more than Tim Hardaway, Penny Hardaway and Grant Hill combined based on their accolades. Hardaway likely knows he’s taking a strong leap with this comment, but he backed it up with zero hesitation as his true belief.

Why Older Legends Often Snub LeBron

Multiple players from the 1990s era have criticized LeBron and other active stars today. Hardaway recently made another strong statement that his former teammate Chris Mullin was a better three-point shooter than current Warriors’ icon Stephen Curry.

Stars from the 2010s to today’s era often have to deal with criticism about playing in a “softer” league. Officiating sees star players getting to the free throw line at will if opposing defenders make them uncomfortable with extra physicality. The influence of outside shooting and a more finesse game often rubs the older names the wrong way.

Hardaway is just one of multiple players from his era that questions how great James truly is. Dennis Rodman made headlines by saying LeBron would not have had the same success playing in his era. This debate will grow even stronger since past legends are now getting the chance to talk more via podcasts and interviews.

LeBron Rarely Talks Back To Former Players

The generally great image of LeBron comes from him picking and choosing his battles. Some controversial statements have come back to hurt him, but James is usually strategic about responding to others publicly insulting him.

Hardaway’s comments will likely never be referenced publicly by LeBron, despite it being a clearly ridiculous statement. The most beloved fans of Hill and Penny would be forced to name James above them when comparing their careers. Even the flawed debate of their prime years saw LeBron going to eight straight NBA Finals at his best.

James may have accomplished his success in ways that previous players didn’t enjoy, but that doesn’t erase reality. Hardaway and other older names also hold it against LeBron that he formed multiple super teams with the Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers to contend. However, these decisions all played into James having a special career that only Michael Jordan rivals historically.
