Flamengohave shockingly fired Filipe Luis just hours after a stunning 8-0 victory over Madureira in the Campeonato Carioca semi-final. Brazilian media outlets have reported that the main reason for the firing was secret talks between the 38-year-old coach and Chelsea’s ownership group, BlueCo.
Luiz Eduardo Baptista, the president of Flamengo and known as “Bap,” found out that the manager had been secretly talking to BlueCo, the company thatown both Chelsea and Strasbourg. This was apparently going on while they were still talking about renewing his contract. Filipe Luis didn’t respond to Flamengo’s board for three days during those talks, which clearly upset club officials.
Luis initially thought he was in talks to be the head coach of Chelsea, but later found out the job was for Strasbourg. He quickly ended the talks and returned to negotiating with the Brazilian giants. However, the damage was already done, and Bap reportedly felt betrayed by the whole thing.
Before the official announcement, Filipe Luis said in an emotional goodbye:
“Regardless of what happens, if tomorrow I am not here, my love and affection for Flamengo will always exist.”
Flamengo Have Potential Replacement for Filipe Luis
Bap’s relationship with his manager broke down when he found out about the BlueCo talks. He thought that Luis would have “betrayed” Flamengo if he had been offered the Chelsea job. The president saw the discovery as the last straw in a relationship that was already strained.
It is a terrible outcome for Flamengo fans, since Luis’s 2025 campaign won the Brasileirão, the Copa do Brasil, and the prestigious Copa Libertadores, making him one of the club’s most famous players and managers.
Flamengo didn’t waste any time finding a replacement because they have a Campeonato Carioca final against their biggest rival, Fluminense, this Sunday. Leonardo Jardim, a Portuguese manager who used to be in charge of Monaco and Al-Hilal, is now the clear favorite for the job.
The experienced coach is currently a free agent, which makes him a great choice for a quick hire. Reports say that talks between his agents and Flamengo sporting director Jose Boto are already very advanced.
