Jonathan Greenard was selected by the Houston Texans as the 90th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Florida.
The perfect pass rush upgrade may have just become available for the Washington Commanders.Adam Schefter reportedon March 3rd that the Minnesota Vikings are open to trading Pro Bowl edge rusher Jonathan Greenard. This stems from the Vikings ranking second-to-last in terms ofcap space available for 2026. The Commanders are entering a defensive rebuild with an emphasis on fixing the pass rush, and Greenard’s presence would certainly help. Not to mention that the Commanders have a direct connection to him.

New defensive coordinator Daronte Jones spent the past two seasons in Minnesota with Greenard. Now, Jones is preparing to call plays for the first time at the NFL level, and having a player with familiarity with him and his scheme makes sense.
The Commanders have the fifth mostcap space in the league. They have room to fit Greenard’s current contract. Greenard is due a base salary of$18.4 million in 2026 and has indicated that he wants a raise. Market value would place that deal closer to$27 million, which the Commanders could handle if they choose to extend him.
In terms of draft compensation,Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that the Vikings would be seeking a Day two pick in exchange for Greenard. But given the Vikings’ cap issues, it wouldn’t be surprising if they end up accepting a day three selection.
Greenard’s inclusion would not only alter the Commanders’ defense but also their priorities in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Greenard Would Provide The Washington Commanders Draft Flexibility
The Washington Commanders have been rumored to have interest in severaledge rush prospects in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft. This includes Texas Tech’s David Bailey, Ohio State’s Arvell Reese, and University of Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. This makes sense given that the Commanders boasted the 14th-lowest graded pass-rush unit in 2025, according toPro Football Focus.However, pass rush isn’t their only need. Adding Greenard would provide the team flexibility with the seventh overall pick.
The secondary is one area the Commanders could address instead. They justreleased cornerback Marshon Lattimore after they posted the third-worst coverage grade as a team in 2025,according to PFF. In this case, LSU defensive back Mansoor Delane could be the optimal choice for them. The Commanders could also be looking for anew weapon for Jayden Daniels, and receivers like Ohio State’s Carnell Tate or Arizona State’s Jordan Tyson are popular names who could fit.
While Greenard perhaps doesn’t offer the long-term upside of a young-draft prospect, he is still an effective player who could bring a steady edge presence for a couple of seasons.
Jonathan Greenard’s 2025 Stats Are Deceptive
After posting24.5 total sacks across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Greenard’s three-sack 2025 campaign looks disappointing. However, he did miss five games, and despite that, he still tied for the Vikings’ lead inpressures with 24 and ranked 17th league-wide in quarterback hurries. He was 31st in total pressures, which suggests that he wasn’t inefficient as a pass-rusher last year; he just didn’t collect the sack stat. Vikings fans reportedly joked all year that he was the king of “almost sacks.”
While not the best nickname to have, it does suggest that Greenard hasn’t lost a step as a player and was perhaps more unlucky than anything. Then you add in the fact that he wasn’t fully healthy. Greenard was also battling ashoulder injury that ultimately ended his season earlier. Combining all these factors makes it clear that 2025 may have more of an outlier than anything.
Daronte Jones was also able to bear witness to Greenard’s down year, so he would know best whether or not Greenard is worth adding to the roster.
Greenard’s scheme familiarity, ability to fill a positional need, and the draft flexibility he provides make him a player the Commanders should definitely consider adding to their roster.
