Andre Trindade’s 94th-minute winner handed Wolves a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League.

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Rob Edwards savoured a late victory over Liverpool and declared: ‘it was a big night for us’.

Andre Trindade’s stoppage-time goal delivered the Premier League basement side a 2-1 victory over the current champions at Molineux. Liverpool were largely frustrated throughout the encounter, being limited to a dearth of chances. And while Wolves were hardly carrying a threat, they opened the scoring through Rodrigo Gomes in the 78th minute.

Mo Salah might have equalised five minutes later but the Reds’ vulnerability of conceding late was exposed for a seventh time this season. In the fourth minute of stoppage-time, Andre’s shot deflected off Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and left goalkeeper Alisson Becker flat-footed.

Wolves are 11 points adrift of safety and are doomed for relegation. But they delivered back-to-back wins, having beaten Aston Villa 2-0 in their previous game. And Edwards, who took charge of the Molineux hot seat in December, toasted the triumph over an ‘amazing football club’.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Edwards said: “It's nice, long may they continue. It's my groin this time. I'm falling apart. This is Liverpool Football Club, never mind this position you're in, any time you beat them you've got to enjoy the moment. They're an amazing football club with an amazing manager, and loads of great players.

“So yeah, it was a big, big night for us. What we're trying to do is improve. We're trying to build some momentum. We know the position we're in. I know I've lost myself in that moment there. People might think we're bottom of the league but you saw the energy around this place. You have to enjoy it. We're trying to turn things around.

"We're showing some fight and spirit, which I know is the bare minimum, but also some quality as well. We're up against some top teams at the moment. The lads, whatever they've got to compete for, whether it's themselves, a World Cup, their family or whether you want to be here next season, you've got to perform well, and they're showing that.

"It took a while. When we first came in, it was difficult. We were short of confidence. Initially, it was hard to turn results around. Our standards had to improve and we had to work harder in training. Now we're seeing the fruits of a lot of hard work in those initially stages. That's what is, just repeat the right messages.

"We've got a really short squad now. We made decisions in January for obvious reasons. We're a tight group now. I want everyone to feel involved.

"At 1-1 if there's going to be another goal you're expecting Liverpool. We've almost had to win the game twice. That's what makes me so glad. We looked a real threat on the counter.”

Liverpool get an opportunity to atone for the defeat when they face Wolves in a rematch on Friday. The two sides meet in the FA Cup fifth round. And Edwards knows that Wolves have made the Reds ‘angry’.

"We just want to try and keep improving,” Edwards added. “We're doing that at the moment. There's a good energy around and a belief we're going in the right direction. Whatever happens until the end of their 38th game we'll just keep fighting. We've made them angry, we know it will be difficult on Friday."
