On This Day in Football: 4th March

On this day, Arsenal unveiled a new kit design at Highbury, transitioning from their traditional all-red shirts to the now iconic red shirts with white sleeves. This change was orchestrated by manager Herbert Chapman, renowned for his innovative approach to the game. Chapman believed that the new strip would enhance player visibility on the pitch. However, the immediate results were not as expected. In their last match wearing the old strip, Arsenal had secured an emphatic 8-0 victory over Blackburn at Highbury. Yet, in their first match donning the new kit, also at Highbury, Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

In front of a crowd of 97,952, QPR came from 2-0 down to win 3-2, with goals from Roger Morgan, Rodney Marsh, and Mark Lazarus. This victory marked the first time a Third Division side won a Wembley final. Despite the win, QPR did not qualify for the Fairs Cup, as the European place was reserved for top-flight clubs. Nevertheless, QPR celebrated a successful season by also clinching the Division 3 title, paving their way to the Second Division and eventually the top flight for the first time in their history.

David Beckham made his League debut on this day, not for Manchester United, but for Preston North End. At 19 years old, Beckham was loaned to Preston to gain first-team experience. His debut came against Doncaster Rovers in a Division 3 fixture at Deepdale, where he scored directly from a corner in a 2-2 draw. Beckham played in all five of Preston’s matches in March, scoring another goal during their unbeaten run. Upon returning to Manchester United, Beckham made his Premier League debut against Leeds, marking the beginning of his illustrious career.

On the same day, Manchester United recorded a historic 9-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, a scoreline that remains the joint-highest in Premier League history. Andy Cole scored five goals, Mark Hughes added two, and Roy Keane and Paul Ince each contributed one to the emphatic win witnessed by 43,804 fans.

Ronaldo, the three-time FIFA World Player of the Year, made his competitive debut for Corinthians after a 13-month hiatus due to a knee injury. Coming on as a substitute against Itumbiara, Ronaldo played 20 minutes without issue. However, post-match, he sustained a bruised and swollen right eye after being struck by a microphone during a media scrum.
