Boehly admits reason for Cucurella signing

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has admitted that Chelsea only signed Marc Cucurella from Brighton because Manchester City wanted him.

The Spaniard had impressed during his time at Brighton when Graham Potter was their manager, and his performances had attracted the attention of a number of big clubs, with City identifying him as a target.

Cucurella was keen on moving to the Etihad and even submitted a transfer request, only for Chelsea to swoop in and paid £63 million for the defender.

At the time Boehly, who was acting as interim sporting director, by his won admission, had no idea what made a good football player. But in the case of Cucurella, he decided if he was good enough for City, then he fitted the bill.

Arguably, Cucurella, who is currently injured, has been one of the better signings of the Boehly era. He is closing in on 150 appearances for the club, and helped them win both the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup last season.
